Your opinion is costing you money

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I tend to focus on social media.  It’s a natural fit for me.  But, once in a while it is important to point out social media doesn’t replace your other marketing efforts.  It’s an extension of them.

I refer to by-the-numbers advertising as hard marketing.  This type of marketing is just as important as any of your other methods.  AdWords, direct mail, e-mail campaigns, print, radio or TV advertising all can play a role in the growth of your business.

But, if you don’t test and track your campaigns, you are wasting money and opportunity.  The ability to test headlines with Google AdWords or on Twitter is very easy and inexpensive.

The reality is that when you create hard marketing messages you have no idea what will work.  Your opinion doesn’t count.

Today you can test just about anything.  My sales representative told me she saw an airplane flying an advertising banner over a busy thoroughfare the other day. My first thought:  Is this an effective advertising method?

A few other folks I talked to that day also saw the aerial ad for the local car dealership. I’m assuming the campaign is working. After all, everyone in this town knows the name of that car dealership.

Ultimately, I don’t know if the campaign is effective to the company’s bottom line.  But, today’s testing methods could help the car dealership find out.

How is this done? Ideas include creating a Web page, or a contest with prizes based on viewing the banner’s message, and testing different banner colors and messages. Response rates could be tested using unique landing pages, phone numbers or polls.

The point is not for you to hire a plane with a banner to get your message across. The point is you really can test almost everything.  Your marketing opinions could be losing you money.  Take the time to test.  Use the readily available tools on the Internet to support your efforts and maximize your marketing dollars.

Social media is an endurance game

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

(Note: please forgive the unedited draft of this article released Friday evening)

mountainAlthough some are working this angle, social media is not about making a fast buck.  It’s about building trust and your reputation as an expert in your field.  Trust is not earned overnight. On the other hand, distrust and a bad reputation can develop quickly.

Not everyone is cut out for the social media marathon.  It takes time and effort.  It is often a lonely game in the beginning. Submitting your first blog post, delivering your first tweet, or Facebook status update is usually met with the little fanfare.

As you network and make connections over time, you will gain followers.  If you offer quality, insightful and unique information people will refer you, share your content, and encourage others to become a part of your community.

Some people don’t have the patience.  They are sprinters. They charge out of the gate, knock on every door and invite every warm body that says yes into their community.  They gain numbers fast and work them hard. In the end, they don’t find the rewards they thought they would with such large numbers.  They don’t earn the results.

Social media is not about quantity; it’s about quality.  Winners earn both quality and quantity. Having a large following of people who trust and care about you is extremely powerful.

Once you get past a few plateaus and earn critical mass you will notice how your following will compound and your calls to action will be answered in greater numbers with positive results.

Over time the competition will drop out of the race.  Yes, new people will fill their shoes, but you will have been promoted in the standings, gaining new followers and earning more trust.  Time will reward you with more influence.

The more power you have, the greater your responsibility.  If you earn a large following the temptation is to attempt to squeeze every bit of social media ROI (return on influence) into fast-cash ROI (return on investment).  This is the quickest way to lose trust and credibility with people you have worked so hard to earn.

Every social media platform has a different tipping point, or critical mass, in which your influence starts to carry a little weight.

The best method of gaining quality followers is to remember it’s about them.  Give, give and give some more.  It can take months or years to reach your goals, but that is why social media is a long-term project.

A few useful items

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Our friend, Frederic, introduced me to the  su.pr video, which is still in Beta. It looks like it could be an excellent traffic driver and analytical tool. It could give my love for bit.ly a run for its money.

Bit.ly is still a great link-shortening program. But you need to sign in to receive all the analytic benefits.

I will be a guest speaker on a webinar on June 23, 2009 , which will be produced by Beate Chelette. I’ll be taking my good material and my A game to the event. It’s worth a look and a listen.

The video about Google Wave is still something you need to check out if you have not yet done so.

Here is my current favorite place to find  free wordpress themes. This is where I found the new theme for the Prosperous Artists Academy.

The Plus system: Picture Licensing Universal System

WordPress 2.8 is now available.

Blog: Photo Attorney
