Your Portfolio should be like the Bui Brothers

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

The Bui Brothers don’t tell you how great it is to work with them – they show you.

You will not find traditional portfolios on their website. Lan and Vu Bui let their clients and behind the scenes videos do the talking. As Lan once said to me “You’re not cool until other people say your cool”,  he’s right.

Above is a shoot with the talented Maurissa Tancharoen. See more of their work at thebuibrothers.com

Six things you don’t know

Friday, November 12th, 2010

As simple as this post concept is – it took more time and effort than I planned.  I hope you learn something new.

  • Places are hot.  Google, Yahoo and Facebook have places and now Twitter is testing their own version (See here)
  • Google is creating an easy to use Android application creator in the labs.  Sign up to be one of the first to test it here.
  • Google is now allowing  photographs to be connected with their AdWords advertising.
  • There is a great blog for iPhone photographers.
  • One of the hottest rumors in social media is that Facebook is going to announce an email service next week.
  • Youtube insights will show you where people leave your videos (very useful).

Five things to do after the sale

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

What you do after the job is complete is as important as closing the sale and doing the work.  Below are five things you should do after photography is complete.

  1. Make sure you have the customers complete addresses, phone numbers and emails.  It is easier to follow-up with a question soon after the job is complete verses months later.  Input all client information and notes into a good customer management system (CMS). You think you will remember everything about the client, but you won’t.
  2. Survey the client after the complete job.  A survey can be long and formal with many questions or a simple phone call  asking about the client experience.
  3. Ask for a referral.  One of the best questions you can ask is “who do you know”.  Be specific about the type of person you are looking for such as someone getting married or a newly employed marketing director.
  4. Ask for a testimonial. If a client is enthusiastic about your work, ask them for a written or video testimonial.  Testimonials are powerful and useful tools to help earn more customers.
  5. Send a thank you. This action alone will earn you more money.
