What does Jack know?

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Jack Hollingsworth is one of the more active photographers on Twitter.  Every once in a while you see one of Jack’s tweets containing a poll.  You may not realize that Jack has been conducting these information-packed polls for a long time. Here are the results of some of his recent polls:

Twitter Polls by Jack Hollingsworth using Twtpoll:

Do photographers use speed lights or strobes? Sixty percent say speed lights.

Do photographers use YouTube or Vimeo for business? Sixty one percent use Vimeo

What type of portfolios do photographers use? (This poll allowed for multiple answers.)

Website: 71%
Printed: 32%
iPad: 24%
Blog: 22%
Phone: 21%

What percent of photographers shoot video with their DSLR? Twenty nine percent don’t use it.

How much time do photographers spend on social media each day? Thirty five percent said they spend an hour.

Do photographers edit with a mouse or a tablet? Fifty three percent said they mostly use a mouse.

Are photographers’ blogs separate from their Websites? Fifty eight percent say yes.

What default ISO do photographers use? Thirty eight percent say 100 and 35 percent say 200.

How much would photographers charge for a social media profile photo? Thirty eight percent say between $50 – $100.

Should photographers display their rates online? Forty six percent say yes.

The classic question, of course, Nikon or Canon? Fifty six percent of photographers say Canon.

Obviously, the results are dependent on Jack’s followers and the number of people who actually participate in the poll.  To see the results of his polls — there are more than 375 —  click here.

Keep an eye on the little things (SEO)

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

When it comes to search engine optimization, or SEO,  little things can give you an advantage.

I’m not one to obsess about the little things.  I’m more of a big picture guy.  But, every few weeks I go through my websites and blogs to make sure all my tags are up to date, photographs are labeled and key words are used to their potential.

Make sure your photographs have alt tags containing keywords describing your photographs.  Videos should also be well tagged. How are your headlines? Could they be adjusted for better SEO?

It’s also a good idea to review your posts and writings to see if there are good words to bold or add an H1 or H2 tag to ad emphasis.

Don’t over do the H1  tags.  Usually one per page is recommended. If you wish to highlight additional words use H2 and H3 tags on the rest of the page.

What SEO review items would you add to the list?
