It’s an exciting future for the new media photographer

Friday, August 1st, 2008

A new media photographer understands that the need for imagery is greater than ever and growing.  She also understands that some types of photography, once profitable, may not be worth pursuing in the digital age.

The rules have changed.  Companies are becoming more concerned about the quality of their web sites than brochures and other printed materials.  Today a web site is mandatory if a business is to be taken seriously.  A brochure is not.

Over the last 24 months, a tipping point has occurred.  For many photographers, requests for original photography are more likely to be used first for a web site.  Just a few years ago, you may recall, uploading images to the Internet was an afterthought.  Today it’s a necessity.

Advertising agencies, designers, business owners and photographers need to understand that when it comes to the web, “good enough” is not good enough anymore. Scary mug shots of employees, fuzzy and poorly lit images of products will more likely result in the loss of new opportunities as quickly as the browser back button can be pressed.

The new media photographer understands the issues and realizes that to be successful she needs to bring something new to the table.  The world is overflowing with “good enough” photography; companies need to be remarkable in a large sea of millions of competitive web sites.

Both the craft and business of photography have changed over the last eight years. What are the changes and where are the answers?  I think I see a series developing.  Stay tuned.
